     The best reasons to live in Houlton Maine / Aroostook County are what we don't  have.  Crime, Pollution, Traffic, Mean People...You don't get these stressors in Houlton Maine.  No high cost real estate mortgages to add to your worries either. There are fewer people, friendly people and a real sense of community and caring.  Why? We are tucked up here in the right hand corner of the country...on the Canadian border.  With 11 people per square mile you don't have all the hassles and rules, laws, zoning that lots of people can create a need for to manage population.  The countryside is unspoiled four season beauty...not a ton of people abusing the place and we give the lake cottage or farm to our kids in better shape than we got it...being good stewards.  The schools are smaller class room sized, parents are very involved in school and sports programs so they know what Jane or Jimmy are up to.  No police office that works right in the school each day like one buyer from Florida told us happens where they live.  The title for this school based police officer is resource personnel.  Sounds better. 

      Also in our local schools....no metal detectors, no german sheperd roaming the halls and sniffing at lockers.  No one carries a taser.  If a student has a problem with a school teacher or school bus driver, parents take the attitude that they love their child but lets make a visit to hear the rest of the story from the school official and then decide if their son or daughter left out some bits and pieces of what happened...really, actually applying tough love and not being afraid to make this into a life learning lesson.  The biggest fear a child in Aroostook County Maine would be to hear a parent say..."You disappointed me".  There is respect, love and a sense of family.  Kids works for their ipods and have to contribute to the family budget...buying school clothes with money made working on a local farm in the harvest or mowing lawns thru out the summer or full time summers and vacations...depending on their age.  Child abuse?  No...learning respect for others, being able to manage money and guided along the way.  They feel part of a family because they have chores around the house...are praised for it and feel involved.  Lazy is not a word to describe many kids in the Houlton area.

 

     Everyone is hard working, industrious and that is why the successful Northern Maine Soap Box Derby program...(largest race in the country five years running due to the dedication of local folks).  Also a four day Houlton Fair which the committee works on year round.  And there's McGill's Band which is 62 musicians who  meet in the park's amphitheatre thru out the summer months...free local entertainment, making music for all ages to enjoy.  Just a few examples. I made it on the Train only one small problem I was supposed to have a six hour lay over in Chicago and ended up with less then 45 mins to transfer lugage and get to the train that brought me here.  I had hoped to see a little of Chicago but that was alright.  I got a little sleep on the train before I got here and so wasn't a bad trip at all.  I did take a few pictures from the train but my computer is down tonight so will post pics later. 

I need someone to suggest a good book to read for the way back.

What I have seen so far Rochester is very colorful.  I did a short walk-about today and found several wild flowers to photograph (agin pics will be posted later)

Grand kids are just wonderful.  Bryce is a hugger and kisser,  Brenna is hell on wheeles, Wes is somewhere in between, lots of energy but very sweet.  Destiny is a wonderful little lady.  She is making plans for her future, working,college, all the things to make a grandma proud.
